"Wow," when I think about all the people who have came into my life and touched me in so many ways, it brings tears to my eyes! When they are gone you never get to tell them how special they are to you. That is why I am taking it apond myself to let those in my life know how I feel about them. 

 

The first person I want to tell you about is the person who brought me into this world, my mother. Many call her Ms. Jo but to me she is mom. My mom has the biggest heart I have every seen. She has always put her family first. My mom has infuenced me in so many ways. Her character is one. She has taught me to be honest and never waiver in any of my decision when it comes to life issues. Her love for me even when she spanked me never changed. She always wanted me to be very successful. I do believe in my heart that my mom wanted to pursue teaching as a career, but  she didn't have the resourses we have today.

 

My father is Johnny, he is one of the smartest men I have ever met in my life. My father graduated from high school when he was 14 years old and then went into the miltary.  He influenced me the greatest- academic wise. Though books, first- hand experiences, and knowledge, he instilled in me the value of education.

 

My grandmother is Jessie Mae. What a stong woman! I guess you can say that I came from strong stock. My grandmother has influenced me in a sense of being strong- willed and dedicated to family  My grandfather died at a young age and she took on the task of raising her family as a single mom in the 1950's. I can only imagine how hard that was. 

 

It is a privilege to have a best friend in a sibling. My brother's name is Dewayne and he is three years younger than me. Now he looks older than me!!  But he has influenced me in ways that I have never known. My brother has encountered many obstacles throughout his life and overcame them. He has always stood strong and remained steadfast. I too, have developed these characteristics and I have him to thank for this!

 

It is really a pleasure to talk about my favorite teacher , Ms. Small. Oh what a smile she had.! It would light up the class. She was the first teacher to tell me that I was beautiful and no need to frown. She influenced me by building my self esteem and changing my perception of self- confidence. I hold my head high because of her!

 

All five of these individuals have uniquely impacted me in numerous ways. It is because of them that I am the woman that I am today. All of their advice, love, wisdom, and support has allowed me to be a strong, black woman. I can always look back on the memories and conversations I have shared with them to help guide and influence the decisions I make.

 

In the Beginning.......

Here I am at 2 yrs. old in 1968, wow what a shock! The story is that back in the day, everyone didn't  have the luxury of getting  their  pictures professioanlly taken. So here I am, sitting on my mother's coffee table with a synthetic (plastic) plant as my background drop! I was sharp ! Times have since changed, even if a person cannot have their pictures professionally taken, technology has allowed for a better backdrop! Who knew that this little girl would turn out to be the woman that I am today; sharp, sophistiocated, and a little bit more hair! This was my beginning. A picture can portray alot about a person. It can allow you to look deeper into a person: their souls, their eyes, their thoughts. Here I am as happy as I can be. No worries, stress, or fears. Your childhood sets the tone for your future. As adults, we sometimes forget how our childhood has molded us into who we are. Our fondest memories and highest moments are more than likely attached to our childhood.

The title of this book is" These Hands'." This is one of my favorite books. It caught my attention when I read the story to my Pre-K class last year. This book talks about how your hands are used to touch the lives of others, as well as yourself.  The book is beautifully illustrated. The pictures are are enriched with color, they grab your attention.  After reading this book, it makes me feel as though my hands will touch many and the reward will be great.

 

 

This picture was drawn by one of the students in my class, who is four years old.  The early part of the year our lesson centered around friends.  The assignment was to think about what you and your friends enjoy doing togather. This student drew him and his friends outside riding on  skateboards. What's intrguing about this picture is how well drawn it is. When I showed his father the picture, he stated," that his son dosen't own a skateboard, let alone cn ride one." So this kid's vivid imagination

is amazing. You never know what a child is thinking. His work has since trancended into another level for someone his age. They have become more detailed and more personal.
