Examining Codes of Ethics
NAEYC 1-1.12- To work with families to provide a safe and smooth transition as children and families move from one program to the next.
This ideal is meaningful to me because it is very important that a child has a strong foundation whether transitioning from home to daycare, Pre-K to elementary school, and middle school to high school. Based on my professional experience, smooth transitions consists of parent support, educator's expertise, and cultural awareness. I have experienced many children from different countries within the classroom. In 2011, my class data, was 18 Hispanics and 2 African- Americans. Each child comes from culturally diverse backgrounds as well as language barriers. Building on a child's self-awareness, competence, and self worth will always guide them along the way to bigger and better things. To do this, I must ensure that there is a strong connection and a supportive cast between myself, families, and communities. Professionally, I have always kept an open line of communication with parents. The rewards in the end are great and lasting when I see that they are now confident with themselves and are able to begin to blossom and open up to their fellow peers. This cannot be accomplished without parent and community support. Working together ensures that children and families smoothly transition from one program to the next.
NAEYC 1-2 ,2- To develop relationships of mutual trust and create partnerships with the families we serve.
This ideal is significant to my professional life because without trust there is nothing to stand on and grow from. Partnerships cannot be created without trust and honesty. As an educator, it is my responsibility to be completely open and honest with parents. In order for a child to be effective in today's society there needs to be a strong support system behind them. This support system should consist of teachers and families. Children are most comfortable when they see their teacher and parents working together to assure their success in the classroom. It goes back to the old saying that it "takes a community to raise a child." Children should always see adults working together without conflict. As I continue to work within the educational field, I must remain truthful and respectful to families to ensure that positive partnerships are formed.
DEC - We shall rely upon evidence based research and interventions to inform our practice with children and families in our care.
This code of ethics is significant to my professional life because research gives a clear picture of what is needed for a child's development and assist families with quality services that will assure progress. Research gives a long-range effect to various programs for young children and their families. It also helps me with sound strategies and ideals for assessment that will help my professional growth. This will further allow more collaboration between colleagues and help with new ideas and new methods for development. Professionally, as I become more immersed and familiar with research, I will be able to provide supportive advice that will lead to the appropriate intervention services for children and families. Evidence- based research and interventions are also meaningful to the classroom and instructional strategies. Utilizing evidence- based research and interventions, I am able to determine what works best with children and families, provide the resources needed for them outside of the classroom, and create an array of options (services) for families who need them.
