In the Beginning.......

Here I am at 2 yrs. old in 1968, wow what a shock! The story is that back in the day, everyone didn't  have the luxury of getting  their  pictures professioanlly taken. So here I am, sitting on my mother's coffee table with a synthetic (plastic) plant as my background drop! I was sharp ! Times have since changed, even if a person cannot have their pictures professionally taken, technology has allowed for a better backdrop! Who knew that this little girl would turn out to be the woman that I am today; sharp, sophistiocated, and a little bit more hair! This was my beginning. A picture can portray alot about a person. It can allow you to look deeper into a person: their souls, their eyes, their thoughts. Here I am as happy as I can be. No worries, stress, or fears. Your childhood sets the tone for your future. As adults, we sometimes forget how our childhood has molded us into who we are. Our fondest memories and highest moments are more than likely attached to our childhood.

The title of this book is" These Hands'." This is one of my favorite books. It caught my attention when I read the story to my Pre-K class last year. This book talks about how your hands are used to touch the lives of others, as well as yourself.  The book is beautifully illustrated. The pictures are are enriched with color, they grab your attention.  After reading this book, it makes me feel as though my hands will touch many and the reward will be great.

This picture was drawn by one of the students in my class, who is four years old.  The early part of the year our lesson centered around friends.  The assignment was to think about what you and your friends enjoy doing togather. This student drew him and his friends outside riding on  skateboards. What's intrguing about this picture is how well drawn it is. When I showed his father the picture, he stated," that his son dosen't own a skateboard, let alone cn ride one." So this kid's vivid imagination
is amazing. You never know what a child is thinking. His work has since trancended into another level for someone his age. They have become more detailed and more personal.

  1. Valerie,
I totally agree with what you said about how your childhood sets the tone for your future. I have a five year old sister and I often think back to my own childhood, thinking about different scenarios and lessons I learned through life. I try so hard to make sure my sister doesn't miss out on the things I feel I missed out on or that she is awarded the same ways I was awarded, always making sure she gets the best out of her childhood so she will grow older and know she deserves the best out of adulthood. This should be the golden rule I feel for EVERY child. To enjoy life, be stress and care free, and start capturing precious memories (photos or mental notes)that will last a lifetime :)

  2. I love what you wrote about the book "These Hands". I love books that are vividly illustrated and have a good message. I will definately be sharing this book with my Preschoolers this year! Books have always held great importance with me as a child and even as an adult. Thank you for sharing and inspiring. :)

    1. It is a joy to see the kids eyes light up when a new book is introduce to them daily. And they love to draw pictures about the book.

  3. I love seeing childrens drawings. All they need is an opportunity to express themselves in an environment in which they feel safe. You will be amazed how children will open up and share things with their teacher when they know the are loved! Congratulations on the progress your students are making. It says a lot about their teacher!
